Restoring the Health of Growing Smiles
Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children? According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), children between the ages of 2 and 11, on average, have 1.6 decayed baby teeth! Fortunately, when caught in their tracks, our dentists can repair tooth decay with tooth-colored fillings. Continue reading to learn more about the process and what your child can expect.
What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Dental fillings repair the tooth structure that has become damaged by decay. They help to keep the compromised tooth healthier going forward, reducing the likelihood of further decay. Tooth-colored fillings are made from composite resin. This is a putty-like mixture that can be shaped to blend in with the rest of the tooth’s structure. This type of filling contains no metal, so they are mercury-free! No one will even be able to tell that your child has had dental work done.
The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling
Tooth-colored fillings usually take place in a single appointment. First, your child’s dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure they are perfectly comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, they will remove any decayed and damaged portions of the tooth and sanitize it.
After the tooth is prepped, your child’s dentist will apply the color-matched composite resin to the tooth in layers until all the lost enamel is restored. The composite resin will be hardened using an ultraviolet curing light. Lastly, the tooth is shaped and polished for a natural-looking result.
