What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are a popular cosmetic dental service that can fix spaced-out, stained, chipped, cracked, and misshapen teeth. To do so, we custom-made thin shells of porcelain and ceramic so the veneer fits perfectly over the front-facing surface of your teeth. Since the size, shade, and shape can be completely customized, the results can be as dramatic or subtle as you’d like too!
The Process of Getting Veneers
Step one is your consultation. During this appointment, we cover a lot of ground – from conducting an oral exam and determining if you’re a candidate to creating your custom treatment plan. Once we’ve determined the ideal size, shape, and shade of your veneers, we will take impressions of your teeth so the lab artisans can craft your final ones. In the meantime, we will adhere a temporary set, allowing you to “test drive” your new smile. After a few weeks, you’ll come in for your final appointment, which is when we will bond your permanent veneers securely in place.
The Benefits of Veneers
Here are a few reasons patients choose veneers over other smile-enhancing solutions:
- Veneers can fix chips, cracks, and other dental flaws simultaneously.
- Veneers are stain-resistant.
- Veneers are completely customizable – from the number you get to their shape and shade.
- Veneers can last for over a decade with proper care.
- Veneers are easy to maintain.

Why Do I Need Temporary Veneers?
Although a veneer is thin, this tiny amount of covering would stick out a little if attached directly to the tooth. As a result, we have to prepare the tooth by removing about 0.5 mm of enamel from the front surface. The temporary veneer protects the prepared tooth from oral bacteria, gives you a more normal look, and allows you to sample how veneers feel. Fortunately, you only have to wear the temporary ones for a couple of weeks!
Does Getting Veneers Hurt?
No, this process involves no pain. Before we touch your teeth, we will give you a local anesthetic, which numbs the area. Therefore, you shouldn’t feel us removing the enamel at all! Especially while you’re wearing the temporary veneers, which may not precisely fit your teeth, you may feel some sensitivity, but it should go away within a couple of days. Overall, your veneers should feel perfectly natural and comfortable, and the process should involve very little discomfort.
Are Veneers Covered by Dental Insurance?
Generally, dental insurance does not have coverage for cosmetic procedures, including veneers. As a result, you will likely be responsible for paying the entire cost. However, at Hamilton Lakes Dentistry, we are flexible and allow you to pay for your treatment over several months instead of all at once. We can help you apply for financing, which divides the total into easier monthly installments. Because of this setup, your perfect, stunning veneers should fit more comfortably in your budget.
Do I Have to Change My Diet for My Veneers?
No, not really. The porcelain material used to make veneers is extremely durable and should be able to handle normal foods just fine. That said, you might be able to extend the brilliance of your veneers if you avoid staining foods and beverages like dark soda, coffee, and red wine. Also, you shouldn’t chew on ice, pens, fingernails, or other objects that your teeth aren’t designed to bite on. These objects could damage the veneers and your natural teeth with micro cracks or chips over time.
